Daniele Vitale
Born on January 5, 1945 in Muralto, Switzerland. He studied architecture at the Milan Polytechnic and here he graduated in 1969 with Aldo Rossi. His academic career started in Milan, at first as Rossi’s assistant (1969-71); in 1976 he was nominated Professor of Architectural Composition. Since 1987 he is Chair; he taught at the Turin Polytechnic and later at the Milan Polytechnic, as well as at foreign universities and at Harvard Graduate School of Design. He always coupled his research on modern and antique cities, monuments and building types, to his design work and theoretical formulations. He collaborated with Ignazio Gardella, one of the masters of Italian architecture, on some projects (in particular for the historical center of Genoa in 1969-74 and for Villa Eremo in Lecco in 1984-86); with Aldo Rossi he worked on two exhibits at the XV and XVI Triennale of Milan (“International Architecture” in 1973 and “Architecture/Idea” in 1981). From 1978 until 1981 he was on the editorial board of “Lotus International”. Since 1988 he was co-directing with Carlo Olmo a series of books (“I testimoni dell’architettura”) published by Allemandi in Turin. He is now directing another series of books (“Il tempo e le opere”) published by Il Poligrafo in Padova. His essays, articles and researches have been published in many books and on the main international reviews; among his writings are studies on European cities, on archaeology, on Rationalism and on Giuseppe Terragni. He coordinated national researches financed by Murst and carried out studies for various institutions and for the European Council. Since 2000 he is directing the PHD course in “Architectural Composition” at the Milan Polytechnic. He especially dealt with the condition of the historical city. He won several architectural competitions, some of which international, and he is author of projects for Italian and foreign, especially Spanish, cities; he developed studies and projects on Milan; he realized a garden in Granada, near the Alhambra; he realized the redesign of the central squares for the city of Rho (province of Milan); he is also author of projects for residential buildings, squares and restorations. He lives and works in Milan.
